Reputed to be one of the best countries in the world, USA is one of the most preferred destinations among migrants to live in. Since the early 1990s, the USA has seen a high number of migrations from other countries. However, following 9/11 and the aftermath events surrounding it, laws have been tightened and fewer migrations are allowed into the country. The Daily Telegraph reported in 2007 that 8 in every 100 Brits leaving the UK were heading for America. So what exactly does the US offer expats around the world?
The standard of living in the US is one of the highest in the world, competing closely with Australia and Canada who are well-known for their high living standards. Self-improvement and the availability of high-tech infrastructures illustrate this point clearly. The availability of virtually every service you can think of for any nationality living in America gives migrants the opportunity to dream big and be successful. This is one of the crucial reasons why many people choose to migrate to America, not to mention the boundless investment opportunities present compared to other countries. The US rank 13th in the Economist’s Quality of Life Index and is a frequent top participator in the UN Human Development Index.
Another factor that contributes to this is America’s economy. Although it has fared rather badly in recent years, America’s economy is still one of the strongest in the world. This serves as an attraction for migrants to flock to the country. According to a BBC news report, if you compare it to the British economy, the US sees a growth of 1.7% versus a decline of 0.5% for the British. The unemployment rate for US stands at an average of 8%. The International Labour Organization published the average wage based on data collected from 72 countries and the America came before the UK and was 4th overall. This means that Americans have more spending power compared to other nations.
3. Multi – Cultural:
Friendliness and its multi-cultural society in America poised as strong factor for immigrants to migrate to the country. With English being the international language, one can communicate at ease with new acquaintances. Apart from that, America which is constantly striving its policy of equality brings about a desirable place to live and work in. Job opportunities are offered to people from different races and walks of life.
In 2012 The Guardian Money supplement listed 2 American cities, Portland in Oregon and Maui in Hawaii, as 2 of the 5 best places to live in the world based on, among other things, value for money and the friendliness of the locals. Add to that an abundance of opportunities and you will begin to realize why America has one of the world’s highest immigration rates as everyone still clamors for that little piece of the American dream.
For people who hold low-income status, American government provides the cash assistance under a scheme called Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is a federal social benefit program that help also the senior citizens (65 years and above) and as well as disabled children. And also the government provides Medicare for their Permanent Residence (who holds their PR status for at least 5 years).
